Cultural Diversity

All of our events and activities seek to support, reflect and welcome the diverse cultures that are represented in our area. We aim to make all of our events inclusive of all communities and welcome enquiries from any community groups who would like support in this area.

Chinese Cultural Showcase 2021

Earlier this year we worked with Takapuna Beach Business Association and many wonderful Chinese clubs and groups to deliver the first Chinese Cultural Showcase. The event took place at 38 Hurstmere in Takapuna and featured many performances from dance and choir groups as well as stalls showcasing calligraphy and fun Chinese New Year themed arts and crafts for the children.

We had plans ready to go for -a Japanese Cultural Showcase event as well but sadly Covid lockdowns and bad weather meant we weren't able to go ahead with it. Watch this space next year for these and more cultural showcases.

Conservation for Migrants

The Sunnynook based Conservation for Migrants workshops were led by Lyford Reserve volunteers and brought together Mandarin speaking members of the community who were keen to volunteer in the Lyford Reserve restoration but to whom language and lack of local environmental knowledge presented a barrier.

Brochure translation

Our Summer fun welcome information is translated into simplified Chinese and we aim to translate posters for events such as our Active Ageing Expo, into simplified Chinese to encourage older adults from the Chinese community to attend. If you might be able to help us with this, please send us a message!

Welcome to Sunnynook

Approximately 50% of the population of Sunnynook at the last Census count, identified as Asian. We have recently worked with Sunnynook Community Association to create a ‘Welcome to Sunnynook’ information pack which was translated into Mandarin and Korean.
